Pictures of Colliding Galaxies From Hubble

Galaxy AM 0500-620This post contain some of the truly amazing images that the Space Telescope Science Institute recently released, as well as a video explaining how our own galaxy will collide with the “nearby” Andromeda galaxy.

In light of Hubble’s 18th anniversary, the Space Telescope Science Institute have released 59 astonishing images showing the rare event of galaxies colliding . A collage of the images is shown below (click to see the large version), and the video display a slide show of all the 59 pictures. On HubbleSite.org there’s also a video explaining how our own Milky Way Galaxy will collide with the nearby galaxy Andromeda in 5 billion years.

    It’s like a beautiful cosmic dance. Too bad we won’t be around to watch one from start to finish. Seeing a CGI simulation in IMAX in 3D would be a great viable alternative.
